Stop Parenting For Your Child's Approval

Good parenting requires explanation.

It doesn't require a TED Talk.

Sometimes we keep talking because we desperately want our child to agree with the correction.

So we explain.

Then explain the explanation.

Then answer the objection.

Then rebut the rebuttal.

And eventually a simple correction becomes a negotiation.

Your child doesn't have to agree with every decision for you to parent wisely.

Explain enough for understanding when appropriate.

Listen when listening is warranted.

But know when the conversation is over.

There is a difference between helping your child understand your decision and needing your child to approve of it.

This Week's Reset

When you correct something this week, pay attention to how long you keep talking.

Say what needs to be said clearly and kindly—then stop.

Ask Yourself

Am I explaining for my child's understanding, or because I need their agreement?
